Self Harm

Self harm behaviors are very concerning for parents and teachers, and can be quite upsetting. Self harm is seen in many forms from cutting of the skin, to burning, scratching or picking, hitting or pulling hair. We often see cutting behaviors begin in adolescents, and education is crucial in understanding this act. When working with individuals who self harm, it is important to educate and manage the desire to hurt ones self. The main goal for counseling will begin with managing the behavior, gaining insight, and learning coping skills to reduce and cease self harm behaviors. Communication skills, gaining insight into emotions and self care are all important aspects to not only stopping self harm, but managing the negative emotions that influence this maladaptive coping skill. It is important for parents to understand that while suicidal thoughts and self harm may exist together, they are not mutually exclusive and self harm is often a coping mechanism to reduce anxiety and emotional pain. Self harm is rarely a suicide attempt, but should be taken just as seriously. Left untreated, this behavior can continue well into adulthood, so prompt and consistent counseling is crucial to managing self harm.

Bullying Issues

It can be extremely difficult as a parent to find out your child is being bullied at school, or that your child is bullying other children. This phase of childhood and adolescents is difficult, and it can be extremely important to help your child understand the impact their actions can have on others. This is also a very fragile time for self esteem, self acceptance, and social support. Children who are bullied often experience symptoms of depression, and may exhibit signs such as isolating in their room, short temper, crying, fear of school or school activities, and a loss of interest in once pleasurable hobbies or tasks. If you feel your child is being bullied or is bullying others, counseling can make a positive impact on self esteem, self image, and communication skills. If your child is exhibiting symptoms of anxiety or depression, call us today to set up an intake!
